Bars in Datong District, Taipei
Datong District is Taipei's old town, where Dihua Street and Dadaocheng have welcomed a wave of bars renovated from historic buildings, exuding a strong retro-literati vibe. Drinking here isn't just about the drinks—it's like stepping into a time tunnel of Taipei. Pairing a century-old street with a fine cocktail makes for a perfect night to experience the charm of old Taipei. 文青風格的酒吧, 隱密小店.

Taipei Dihua St. - Corner Sip (Wine Bar) $$
I attended a performance by the Taipei Assad Middle Eastern Dance Troupe, founded by Teacher Shao, at the NTU Foreign Language Resource Center. We enjoyed dances from Arab, Turkish, Iranian, and Azerbaijani cultures. Afterwards, I visited a couple of museums at NTU I hadn't been to before, and in the evening, I headed to Dihua Street to check out Corner Sip, a wine bar that's been open for less than half a year.

After a meeting at the World Trade Center, I used a voucher near Ningxia Night Market and stumbled upon this great-value spot. Their cheapest glass is only 150 NTD and quite generous. I enjoyed a few glasses, savoring this peaceful evening.

Taipei, Datong District, USE Sake Garden $$
In the afternoon, I met Joey and Andrew at USE Sake Garden in Datong District to discuss some matters. Andrew just flew back from Thailand, where his Hangzhou media company's livestream hosts were helping sell products. Joey's friend runs a Shanghai media company with over 200,000 MCN bloggers, netting about 50 million RMB annually. We explored potential synergies between their networks while I listened in.

In the morning, I visited my Weidao schoolmate Chengwei at He Ding Asset Management, who helps manage his family's funds, and we exchanged various insights. In the afternoon, I explored the nearby Taiwan New Cultural Movement Memorial Hall and Peace and Women's Human Rights Museum, learning more about the 1923治警事件 involving Jiang Weishui. Strolling around, I ended up in Dadaocheng and sat at Salon et Tutu, enjoying a glass of Italian orange wine from old vines for some quiet me-time.

Taipei, Dadaocheng, CELEBRITY'S Champagne (Celebrity Taste Champagne International) $$$
Over the weekend, I finished watching the 30-episode 'Blossoms' starring Hu Ge, which delves into the Shanghai Stock Exchange plot. On a whim, I booked a visit in the afternoon to one of Taipei's few museums I hadn't seen yet—the Stock Museum. After listening to the explanations and seeing the physical TSMC stock certificates, in the evening, I thought, why not drop by Christophe's shop in Dadaocheng? I came on a whim, and surprisingly, Christophe was there, so we opened a bottle…

Le Ble d'Or — Taipei $$
Had a lunch gathering for six at Taipei Le Blé d'Or and Jiajia Snack Shop. Met Larry for the first time, who has worked in proprietary trading at major securities firms, often appears on TV, and now helps mainland companies expand overseas at Boda. The first dinner was with Andrew, Sheng, and Nick at Jiajia, a nearly 50-year-old establishment with great food—thanks to Sheng for hosting. Nick, a dual CPA in Taiwan and the US, is a graduate of NTU Accounting and UIUC, truly outstanding. After parting ways, headed to the Zhongxiao Dunhua area for a second round, introduced by a friend to meet Sister Duan...

Taipei Dadaocheng Vin Nature 45 Zi Ran Cheng $$
Taipei Dadaocheng Vin Nature 45 Natural Ting. 'Last night's stars, last night's breeze, west of the painted tower, east of the cassia hall.' But tonight is just beginning. After dinner, strolling through Taipei's old streets, moonlight spills onto the Dihua Street Ten-Unit Building. Walking to Liangzhou Street, this shop was also closed the other day when I came. Luckily, it wasn't supposed to be open today either, but the owner Christophe happened to be at the neighboring shop. Seeing me standing outside, he opened the door and let me in to sit down, first offering me a glass of Slovenian white wine. Then he even sat down and chatted with me for a bit... Christophe, who studied in the UK...

Taipei Yuanshan Station Le Wine Bar by Burgundy Cave $$
Taipei Yuanshan Station Le Wine Bar by Burgundy Cave. After finishing a meeting in Xinyi District in the evening, I thought about a shop near Yuanshan Station I tried last time but found closed. So I went directly along the MRT Red Line and came here again. This Burgundy Cave is a wine merchant that expanded from Hong Kong. The interior space is quite spacious, and the young staff they hire are all very youthful. Here, I ordered a serving of Burgundy-style braised beef cheek to pair with a Burgundy red wine. Both taste good ~ By Morgan @2023.10.26 evening...

Taipei Zhongshan Station WOWffizi Bistro $$
Thinking back to my years right after grad school, serving my national defense service in Hsinchu Science Park, almost every weekend I'd play badminton with Zhiqian, Xiao Cai, Weng Liang, Yan Lü, Zongwei, Brother Liren... at the NCTU gym, often for the whole afternoon. After playing, I'd usually find a restaurant in Hsinchu for us to eat at. In a blink, almost twenty years have passed. I never thought I'd have the chance to play badminton on the same court with Zhiqian again today.

Alex lured me out with a Junmai Ginjo and a Daiginjo sake at Taichun Xiaoguan on Minsheng West Road in Taipei. Joined by Jingyun, English teacher Winnie, Alex's real estate friend Zihao, and Zihao's elder brother, Chairman Cai, who runs several moving companies in Taipei, we drank and chatted together—thanks for the treat, Alex! Afterward, Chairman Cai invited us to continue the night with karaoke on Linsen North Road, wrapping up the long holiday nicely. By Morgan @2022.10.10

Taipei Tai Chun Xiao Guan Japanese Restaurant $$
In the evening, Alex invited Manager Liang and me for drinks. After handling requests from eight different friends over the weekend, we came here for dinner. Thanks to Alex for the treat! After the meal, we moved to near Taipei City Hall Station to meet with Teacher Chen to hear about an investment in micro-hydroelectric power equipment. Didn't expect to be back at Cathay Landmark (Breeze Xinyi) upstairs just a few days later—last time it was to visit Liangqu on the 21st floor next to Tencent, and today it's to Teacher Chen's office on the 29th floor. Thanks to Teacher Chen for his time and explanation!

Zhong Mountain Zhan Galerie Bistro — Taipei $$$
Had lunch with General Manager Liang and Tony at Galerie Bistro near Zhongshan Station. Tony is still a manager at SinoPac in Hong Kong. The last time we met was over a year ago at my old place by the Hong Kong waterfront, drinking red wine and enjoying the night view. Time flies, and due to the pandemic, I haven't seen many Hong Kong friends for a long time. Tony is back in Taiwan for now to visit some overseas banking clients and will decide after the new year whether to return. We met at this bistro near Zhongshan Station for a meal and some red wine.
