Black Bottle — Minsheng, Taipei $$$
Finished up work in the evening and came to this place, where I met Brother Yan, who's 71. Brother Yan has been in the food and beverage industry for 45 years, having run French, Spanish, and Italian restaurants. We hadn't even chatted much after I sat down, and without ordering or paying for any drinks, Brother Yan first poured me 6 glasses of wine to try—4 whites and 2 reds. Later, a sales rep from a liquor distributor came over and offered Brother Yan some whiskey to sample. Brother Yan knows many distributors in Taipei. The shop was supposed to close at 22:30, but Brother Yan and I ended up drinking and having a great conversation until after 7 a.m. Cheers! By ...

Taipei Baoqing St. Black Horse Little Kitchen (3rd Visit) $$$
Third visit to Black Horse Kitchen on Baoqing Street in Taipei. After finishing the anime 'Solo Leveling' today, I attended an event hosted by David in the evening. Their wine importer, Taifeng, recently brought in several wines from the Southern Rhône region of France, so David organized a small, relaxed wine tasting dinner for six people at Black Horse to let everyone try them. Taiwan is a small place—I even ran into Brother Sheng at the restaurant downstairs when I was heading out. Tonight, besides meeting Leticia and Xiao Yu again, I also got to know Brother James, who works in computer (laptop, server...) cables and has a high market share.
-
Minsheng E. Rd. Alley kaï bistro à vin — Taipei $$$
Kai Bistro à Vin, tucked away in an alley off Minsheng East Road, was recommended by Sihao from 'Fermented by Zeng House'. The place focuses on European cuisine and natural wines. After leaving a Spanish tapas bar, I came here alone for a glass of wine—it was packed, with no seats available earlier in the evening. Luckily, by around 9 PM, I finally got a spot and had a brief chat with the owners, Kai and Ivy, over a glass of natural wine.
-

This is my second visit to the Spanish tapas bar in Taipei's Songshan District. The other day, Pat introduced me to Snow, a partner at Cherubic Ventures. Snow mostly lives in Singapore now, and we discussed potential collaborations. In the evening, I practiced golf with Zixuan at the hotel downstairs and ran into our Japanese coach, Moto. After working up an appetite, we headed to a nearby restaurant...
-
Taipei Mandarin Oriental Hotel 3F Ya Ge Cantonese Cuisine $$$$
Life is a series of countless connections. Every memory is born from such connections. Tonight's dinner with four friends also started because Andy introduced his CMU classmate Jeffery to me, and I then introduced Jeffery to senior Lman. Pat introduced his Cornell classmate Samuel to me, and I also introduced Samuel to senior Lman. The gathering at the one-Michelin-star Cantonese restaurant Ya Ge at Mandarin Oriental Taipei was a result of these intertwined connections.

Jeffery, whom I hadn't seen in over a year, returned from the US. We had a lunch gathering today with good friends Sam, Lman senior, and junior Jserv. As I'm usually the one in charge of picking restaurants, I rode the wave of popularity and booked one of Jensen Huang's favorite spots: Lao Lao Hotpot. Jeffery, a CMU graduate, spent many years at Apple where he led the development of the Chinese version of Siri. This weekend, he's leaving Apple to embark on his second career path as an entrepreneur...
-
Taipei Baoqing St. Hei Ma Xiao Chu $$$
I ducked into this small, highly-rated restaurant on Baoqing Street to escape the rain. Intrigued by a dish called 'saltimbocca alla Romana' on the chalkboard—an Italian specialty of meat, sage, and ham—I had to try it. The aroma was enticing when it arrived!
-
Taipei Jixiang Rd. Jue Hao Diao Japanese Seafood Izakaya $$
Since returning to Taiwan from China/Hong Kong during the pandemic, my life has swung between extreme busyness and unusual freedom. After a long day of mental work on a holiday, I finally had time for dinner at 9 PM. I came to this izakaya for a sea urchin crab rice bowl, some skewers, and a bottle of sake, enjoying a moment of peace alone. Life is fleeting, and time is becoming increasingly scarce.
-
Taipei Yanshou St. You&me Beef Noodle Bar $$
After finishing work for the day, I went for a walk nearby and stumbled upon an interesting spot in Minsheng Community: You&me Beef Noodle Bar. As the name suggests, it serves both beef noodles and drinks. The place offers craft beers from various countries and stays open until 1 AM, making it perfect for a late-night meal. Enjoying a steaming bowl of beef noodles with an 8% Taihu craft beer on the side creates a unique Taiwanese 'marriage' of hot and cold—a delightful experience.

Taipei, Chang'an E. Rd., Zui Weng Fishing Port Seafood $
After dropping off my eye massager for repair at OSIM on Chang'an East Road, I tried their latest AI massage chair. In the evening, I met up with Lman, Joey, Andrew, and Howard (retired from banking) for some lively stir-fry.

-
Taipei Brother Hotel - Orchid Hall $$$
After the morning Zomma Protocol meeting, Pat invited a few good friends to gather at noon, including IP, whom I hadn't seen in a while and who works under Taiwan's investment banking godfather, and newly met Bryan, who manages the global market trading department at Yuanta Securities (Hong Kong). Just chatted with Bryan about the possibility of listing funds with them. Thanks for the treat, Pat! Later moved to Hive... then to AW Wine (3rd visit).

Had a simple and tasty lunch at JR East Japan Hotel after meeting with CEO Liang, whom I hadn't seen in a while. The Wagyu beef curry here is quite good, paired with a glass of red and white wine. Taipei Mandarin Oriental Hotel 5F Tajimaya Premium Shabu Shabu $$$$
Only upon visiting today did I learn that this place operates independently from Tajimaya. Tajimaya is a century-old Japanese meat supplier with many dedicated restaurants in Taiwan, while Tajimaya Jia is its importer in Taiwan, mainly represented by this restaurant at Mandarin Oriental and its second branch. Regardless, Tajimaya Jia remains one of Taipei's top-tier shabu-shabu spots—on a Monday night, only seats after 7:30 PM were available. With drinks, per-person spending starts around NT$3,000+. The American red wine Skyside paired with the meal tonight was okay. Each table is a private dining space...
-
Taipei Mandarin Oriental Hotel 6F Bencotto Italian Restaurant $$$$
I still remember when Bencotto first opened a few years ago—I couldn't get a reservation back then. Today, I managed to snag one of the last few tables for dinner. The four-course set menu costs around NT$2,000+ and offers decent value, featuring dishes like beef tartare, pappardelle, and wagyu. The ambiance and service were both great. The only letdown was the NT$4,000+ 2016 Italian red we ordered—it didn't quite feel worth the price, especially after checking Vivino and seeing it rated only 4.0...
-
Taipei Lane off Dunhua N. Rd. Shi Er Lan Crab Seafood Congee $$$
Nearly seven years ago, Manager Liang, Naiwen, and I hung out at a bar in Beijing's Millennium Hotel. Back then, Naiwen was still working at Goldman Sachs' Beijing office. Hope we can do this again soon! After touring around Taiwan and stopping in Taipei, I seem to be stuck here instead of heading back to Taichung... silly Xiaomi probably thinks...
-
Chen Premium Japanese Restaurant — Taipei $$$$
Tonight, I introduced two seniors and chose Chen, a former private club, as the venue. Besides a few counter seats, it's all private rooms, perfect for chatting and business. Tucked away in a basement near Keelung and Zhongxiao East Roads, it's quiet, not widely known, and easier to book on weekends. The ingredients are top-notch, with set menus at 1,500, 2,000, and 2,500 TWD.
-
Taipei Strait Club $$$$
Dined at the Cross Straits Club in Taipei. Mr. Liang is returning to China tomorrow, so he invited Morgan (me) for dinner tonight. After some thought, we came here. It's a restaurant and private club founded by Tsai Chen-nan, located in the B1 of the Hung Kuo Building, spanning 1,500 ping. All 24 rooms are private dining rooms, offering a very tranquil atmosphere. It even has Japanese ganbanyoku (hot stone baths) for relaxation, which is quite unique. It's perfect for business discussions or gatherings with close friends. Tonight we had their shabu-shabu with two bottles of Chilean red wine, totaling...
-
Taipei Ruth's Chris T-Bone Steak $$$$
Last night, Brother Mu specially came up from Taoyuan to see me. After thinking about a location, I took him for a SPA, alternating between an extremely hot sauna and a ten-degree ice pool, which was quite thrilling. Today, after coding all day, I suddenly received a call from General Manager Liang in the evening. He said he just returned from Shenzhen and invited Morgan for dinner. So we came to Ruth's Chris Steak House together. Chatting over dinner, we opened an Argentine red wine, which paired very smoothly with the steak. Ruth's Chris is still doing great business; even on a Sunday night, it's hard to get a reservation...
-
Taipei Brother Hotel Chrysanthemum Hall Japanese Restaurant $$$
